Memory: Viking Cruise - Norway
What an epic cruise upon the Viking Star up the Norwegian coastline, in the Arctic Circle . Truly unforgettable.
Throw back to 2020: ever intrigued by the Aurora Borealis aka the Northern Lights, I was determined to catch a glimpse at some point in this life. But, how? Where to trek? How long do I hang about waiting? Will I freeze before they appear?
A travel agent pal recommended Viking Cruise’s “In Search of the Northern Lights” for a stress-free, luxurious, cruise along the Norwegian coast, up into the Arctic Circle. We checked it out. Oooh, la! A floating five-star, boutique, hotel? Drop anchor! Present that plank! We’re boarding baby!
Viking Cruises cater to travellers who want to expand their minds and enrich their appreciation of the countries they’re exploring. You’ll find a seemingly endless list of luxuries, comforts and “wow” moments aboard their ships. So, let’s dive into their “uh, no, we don’t do that” list: no casinos, kids under 18, no umbrella drinks, no smoking, no queues, no discos or formal events… none of the stuff you’d find on the mega family cruises. Bliss.
Boarding in Bergen, Norway, we were delighted to discover a vast selection of serene spaces, infused with Scandinavian style. The dining was divine, with the offerings shifting to honour the local foods of each port we pulled into.
I have many words but little room (ed note - I originally wrote this copy for Instagram, hence the word limit). The crux of it = we had an epic time. Aurora Borealis? Yep, we stood in awe as it danced above us one night. We cruised up and into the Arctic Circle, exploring towns and soaking in the majestic fjords and coastline along the way. Will we be cruising with Viking again. Absolutely, YES. 10/10.
