Berlin’s beloved Currywurst!

I devoured my inaugural serving of Berlin’s famous currywurst on a cold & drizzly day. It was the perfect setting to tuck into a paper plate, heaving with hot comfort nosh with an itty bitty bamboo fork.

We were huddled around tables next to the Zoologischer Garten railway station subway entrance, sharing the space with a guy who appeared to be rushing from work to wherever he needed to be next; and a dodgy geezer who was inhaling weed from a coke bottle bong while eyeing off my serve. Never felt more like a local.

Legend has it that this local favourite of boiled (or fried) sausages served upon fries and topped with curry powder and “chillup” (a chilli & ketchup combo) was invented by a Berliner in 1949. Since then, it’s taken on legendary status, and I understand why this is so.

What looks like a heavy, unbearably rich serving of cholesterol-laden fun-fair-food is surprisingly refreshing, zingy and yummo.

While it sits well within the “sometimes food” category, alongside every other food that brings me joy (I never could conjure any affection for a salad), it’s one that I would have difficulty restraining myself from buying more often than I should if it was in ready supply.

I love you, Berlin, but your currywurst would end me!
