Pumpin’ tastes @ Gasoline Grill, Copenhagen

When I told my wife we were pulling into Gasoline Grill for lunch, she expected a dirty burger. What she got was a world-famous, engine-starting mouthful of prime yummo.

Having discovered the world of sublime burgers during a trip to the USA as a teenager, the owner of Gasoline Grill spotted a vacant petrol station that sat in between two busy roads in Central Copenhagen as the spot to bring his ambitions to life. This isn’t a novelty petrol station; it’s legit. Cars were pulling in to power up their vehicles while we lined up.

The burgers are made fresh on-site, using local ingredients. When their supply runs dry, they shut up shop. So, we got in early for our fix to ensure we didn’t miss out on one of Bloomberg’s top 27 burgers in the world (the only Nordic flipper on the list).

As expected, there was a queue. There’ll always be a queue at this joint. But, with a menu focused on quality, not quantity, the Grill only churns out five burger varieties,
( 3 x beef, 1 x veg, 1 x chook). Resultingly, the orders are churned through with alarming efficiency. We were given a 7-10 minute wait time, and my name was called out well within that bracket.

Out from a side window popped two Original Burgers - no cheese (because I can only pop so much Lacteeze in this. lifetime) - and a serving of fries seasoned with truffle salt.

It ticked all my boxes and more with 100% organic beef, ground and shaped on-site, plus lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, and Gasoline sauce. I’m going to drill down on those pickles now. I’m mad for a pickle; they add the bite and zest to any plate. So, when I noticed a generous serving of pickles piled into my burger, I was in heaven. So many times, I’ve added pickles to my order to find I’ve paid an extra few dollars for a meagre two or three thin slices. For this inclusion alone, I demand that they be bumped up to the top five burgers in the world.

The fries. Oh. The fries. Wow. Little crinkly nuggets of truffle salted heaven. I’d ordered the large size to share with wifey, and even then, our knuckles were banging against each other as we dove in for another bite.

Given the number of people who gather around the tables besides Gasoline Grill, you’d expect it to be a loud joint. It isn’t, though. With a playlist of tunes that was cooler than I’ll ever be, the crew were all tucking into their burgers, listening to the songs while living their best life.

Once we were done, we were DONE. Oomph.

With our happy hands wiped free of flavour thanks to their complimentary wet wipes, we headed off, bellies full and energy levels powered up with the premium Gasoline Grill fuel.
