A carnivore’s delight @ War Pigs Brew Pub, Copenhagen

This little piggy went to market, and unlike the pork upon my tray, I made it all the way home, feeling very happy with myself.

We found War Pigs Brew Pub, appropriately, in Vesterbo’s Meat Packing District, which harks back to 1878 (the Brown District) and 1934 (the White District); the latter being the area to which we headed to drink the beer and eat the meat.

It was 3 degrees outside with a wind that was slicing through my jeans like an icy knife, so it was a relief to step into the warmth and grab a bench at a communal table.

The interior space was a mash-up between a German beer hall and a science lab, with rows upon rows of rectangular wooden tables surrounded by stark, white tiled walls. The warmth and good energy were brought into the space by the tribe of happy-to-be-here beer and meat lovers.

I’m always in favour of others doing the thinking for me when it comes to the best flavours in the house, so I opted for the Trooper Tray, then (politely) watched on as the chef, who was laden with a very big knife, prepped our meal.

On went the selection of smoked meats - spare ribs, pulled pork, chunky sausage - and side serves of pickles and slaw. Next up, the beer. There was no bypassing that; after all, there are 22 options on top from the American brewery 3 Floyds and local Danish brewery Mikkeller. We went with a Black IPA for depth and bite and a NEIPA for haze and aroma.

Time to tuck-in! The pulled pork was delish and dense, so a bit of sauce was required to lubricate the pipes. Lo and behold, a selection of fit-for-purpose Mikkeller-made, sauces were on our table, awaiting this moment. The Carolina Gold sweet mustard and Kansas City bbq sauce did the trick.

The sides mixed well with the meats, although if I went a second round, I’d know to mix the pickles in with the pork instead of picking them out one by one, leaving me with a pile of pickles at the end. If I’d picked my pile of pickles better, I wouldn’t have felt so pickled myself once I’d picked my way through the pile of pickles due to my poor planning. Thankfully, I had beer left over to placate my pickling.

Would I go for a second round? Yes, absolutely. I’ve gotta honour those perfectly pickled pickles and devour more of that rich, smoked, meaty goodness! It gets a mighty oink of satisfaction from me!
